Our first morning in Kenya we woke up, had breakfast, and headed up to Nyeri by Mt. Kenya. We stopped by the Del Monte Juice stand on the way off Thika Road. There were a bunch of pineapple field there. Yummy juice and fun to see how pineapples grow.
As you can see our van was extremely packed. Our van trips were probably the times we feared for our lives the most. The roads were awful and the Kenyans drive like maniacs. We loved our driver Big T, but he is the ambulance driver for the hospital so that might give you a bit of a clue to how he drove. Though our rides were crazy, Big T took good care of us and the Lord kept us safe.
This is what the church looked like when we got there. The Outreach Foundation has a team of local foreman that prep all of the projects. They come and put in the foundation, walls, windows, doors, and roof. All the teams have to do are put up the sheet metal walls(mabati), and paint the window frames and doors.
The people loved to help. Most of them have never painted before so we had to teach them how. The sweet lady in the green skirt cracked me up. She was more into singing than painting. She would paint a few strokes and then would start dancing, needless to say she made a bit of a mess. It was amusing though, and the work got done one way or another.

I thought this was a neat picture of the scenery from the inside of the church. It's too bad we had to put the walls up.
The people were so sweet and took wonderful care of us.
The ladies worked so very hard. They did most of the work. They cooked, cleaned, farmed, did manual labor, and raised the kids. The men mostly supervised. Pretty interesting. Some of the men did work, but their culture as a whole has the women doing most of the work.
They loved singing and dancing! We were greeted by song when we arrived the first day and everyday before we left there were lots of songs. We loved listening!
Scott was wowing everyone after dinner with his card tricks. He had them all stumped for a really long time! It was a great first day and we were excited to continue to work on the church and get to know the wonderful people there.

...and i heard you have more big news in your life?! england! wow. you must be experiencing so many emotions, all at once. when do you move?
