Dad's T-38 Jet Ride

Dad was able to be a fighter pilot for a day. He rode along in the T-38 fighter jet for a dog-fight training mission with the 49th Flying Training Squadron here at Columbus Air Force Base.

His training started out in Aerospace Physiology. Here he learned how to correctly eject from the plane if necessary, and how to parachute and land without injury. It was quite the introduction and made the rest of us a little leery, but it was good information, just in case. From the pictures you can tell Dad is a little excited. He was able to get this training out of the way on July 4th after the fireworks, so he wouldn't be rushed the day of his flight.

The long awaited day of his flight finally arrived. First he had to see the flight doctor to be medically cleared to fly. After the doctor, he went to Life Support Training. There he was fitted for a flight suit, and helmet. They checked to make sure his oxygen mask fit correctly an didn't leak anywhere. He also received a G-Suit, to help him pull Gs. You'll have to ask Scott what that means, I just know it happens when the plane goes really fast. After receiving all of his equipment and gear, he was almost ready to go. After a little break to grab a snack, it was time to brief. After the pre-brief, they stepped to the jet. He flew with a pilot named "Freeze". They flew against another instructor and student. Dad's goal of the mission was to "shoot the student down"-don't worry, it was just for training purposes!

They arrived at the plane and it was go time. Dad got situated and got a quick lesson on the gauges and it was time for the ride of his life. Happy flying!

Off he goes, into the wild blue yonder!!!!

Yeah, he made it safely to the ground!!! He had an awesome ride, and didn't even get sick. Way to go. The clouds were a little limiting, but they were able to complete their mission and have some fun also. The pilot demonstrated a few barrel rolls and then let Dad try. Sounds like fun to me!
After the debrief, it was time to come back to reality. We are so glad he was able to be a fighter pilot for a day, but as you can see, the family is very happy he is safe on the ground! We are so glad you got to have this fun opportunity. We hope you enjoyed it Dad!
